DANIEL ARSHAM

May 2021.

Sharing a mutual curiosity for the ocean, technical craftsmanship and experimentation, Haydenshapes and Daniel Arsham collaborate to create limited edition surfboards blending art and function.

The release highlight was the functional 'Eroded Surfboard” featuring quartz and selenite detailing, developed in Haydenshapes custom facility in Sydney, Australia. This groundbreaking design launched in an edition of 500 pieces selling within 7 minutes of launch online.

Made using traditional surfboard foam, resin and fiberglass, it’s the untraditional and experimental construction methods that made it so one of a kind. The brief; incorporate Arsham’s fictional archeological erosions in 3D physical form and replicate a similar feel and function of a traditional surfboard. The finished result was a typical shortboard weight and shape, featuring eroded hollow sections scattered internally throughout the board beneath a clear polished fiberglass shell (windows).

Prior to the launch, the finished prototypes were ridden and tested by 8 time world champion surfer Stephanie Gilmore and long time Haydenshapes muse and team rider, Craig Anderson.

The collaboration collection also included a solid clear resin surfboard sculpture 'Crystal Surfboard'. Weighing in at around 90 pounds and made using proprietary single pour large format casting methods.  The 'Crystal Surfboard' was the most ‘scarce’ of the collaboration with an edition of 30 released only.

Adding wearability to the offering, designer Chris Stamp of cult LA fashion label Stampd partnered with Daniel and Hayden create a collaboratie 9 piece softgoods capsule. A balance of leisure and versatility, the range was designed to suit all genders with high quality construction, technical embroidery and tonal finishes that bring to life Arsham’s handwritten erosion sketches paired with Haydenshapes’ and Stampd monochrome palette.

Exclusive ‘Wave Relic’ pop up retail experiences featuring the entire collection took place in Bondi, Sydney, Australia, the Stampd Flagship store on La Brea in Los Angeles, USA, and in store at I.T Hysan, Hong Kong.

The 'Eroded Surfboard' was the highest and fastest selling limited edition board release in surfing history and unique Haydenshapes brand highlight.
