The first instalment of our HSSTUDiO Art Release series is here.. A visual story, static and moving, culminating in a new print addition to our custom board line up. Welcome… Hanalei Reponty + Abysse.
Born and raised in Tahiti French Polynesia, Hanalei Reponty-Gudauskas is a surfer, wife to Pat Gudauskas and the founder of Abysse – a neoprene infused swimwear label based out of California and Australia.
Iconic to the local area in which Hanalei grew up, The pink whipray (Himantura fai) is a species of stingray and exhibits a high degree of fidelity to particular locations. The pink whipray has a diamond-shaped pectoral fin disc wider than long, with a broad-angled snout and a very long, whip-like tail without fin folds. It has only a few small thorns on its back and is uniform brownish to grayish pink in colour, becoming much darker past the tail sting. This large ray can reach 1.8 m (5.9 ft) across and over 5 m (16 ft) long. It was this species that inspired a signature colour way and print within the environmentally ethical Abysse brand who produce using eco friendly rubber and highend Japanese limestone neoprene – made in California.
Over the last few months, we’ve been working with Hanalei on a HSTUDiO Style Release, a visual story – static and moving – culminating in a new print addition to our custom board line up.
Drawing on the Haydenshapes black, white and grey palette – we’ve injected the ‘Abysse’ stingray skin print as the base, sitting beneath a white lined black diamond shaped stencil over the rails. These boards are a fully functional performance style piece, unisex and available through selected Haydenshapes retailers, ready to ship on our site (Plunder) and custom via HSSTUDiO custom board designer across all models.
The short film piece above and the photo story below was captured on the south coast of New South Wales, Australia, where you’ll find the worlds whitest and most pristine sands, crystal clear waters and some fun waves.
Hanalei + Abysse Print in Plunder are available now ready to ship.
