NOVA // Three Constructions

A closer look at how each construction shapes the Nova.

Tanner Gudauskas and the UsedSurf team tested the Nova at Lower Trestles across three constructions: Polytech (PU), FutureFlex, and Carbonyx. Designed as a performance groveller, it showed its range in near-perfect Lowers conditions - fast, responsive, intuitive and a load of fun.

POLYTECH (PU)

Polytech is the most stable and predictable of the three. It carries more weight through the board, which translates into control when the wave has push. Lines feel clean, and the board holds through turns without needing adjustment.

“Drivey, fast down the line… the PU felt really good when the waves had a bit more push.” It’s the most familiar feel underfoot — reliable, composed, and suited to cleaner conditions with a bit of energy.

FUTUREFLEX

FutureFlex shifts the Nova into a lighter, more reactive space. The construction sits higher on the water and generates speed more easily, especially in weaker surf. There’s a noticeable spring through turns, giving the board more lift and release.

“Very springy… a lot of pop. If it was two foot, I’d grab that one straight away.” Best suited to smaller waves and everyday conditions where speed needs to be created, not just carried.

CARBONYX

Carbonyx sits between the two. It combines the responsiveness of an epoxy construction with added control, giving the board a more balanced feel across conditions. It generates speed easily but stays composed when the wave stands up.

“It bridged the gap perfectly… that was the star of the show.” In the session, it handled the widest range, from softer sections to more critical parts of the wave without needing to adjust approach.

The Difference

  • Polytech (PU) — grounded and controlled
  • FutureFlex — light and reactive
  • Carbonyx — highly responsive for critical sections

Each construction shapes how the board carries speed and holds through a turn — from a more planted, dependable feel in PU, to increased lift and release in FutureFlex, through to the added drive and heightened response of Carbonyx.

Polytech delivers a classic, reliable feel that holds across a wide range of conditions, including wind-affected or less-than-perfect surf. FutureFlex builds on that foundation with a lighter, more reactive nature, creating a spring through turns and a more lively response underfoot. Carbonyx pushes performance further — faster, more sensitive, and tuned for a higher level of precision when pushed through more critical sections. It’s the most advanced expression of the design, built to perform at its highest level.

For surfers starting out or unsure where to begin, the [HS] Atelier Range offers a more accessible entry point. With increased width and volume, these boards provide added stability and paddle power, helping you catch more waves, build confidence, and progress faster.
