Designed and patented by Haydenshapes founder Hayden Cox, FutureFlex is an affluent mix of modern custom designed materials and modern design innovation for high performance surfing. The construction combines a stringer-less, high-density custom shaped EPS core laminated with biaxial fiberglass, epoxy resin and a parabolic carbon fiber frame.
The carbon fiber frame within the laminate is the key to the performance vitality of the overall product. Designed to maximize speed and drive while minimizing twist, FutureFlex essentially stores and releases energy as the surfer transitions through a turn. Tom Carroll, who was the very first person, after Hayden, to test drive the first ever FutureFlex, describes the tech as “the Ferrari of surfboards” for it’s fast-twitch nature and lively response. The FutureFlex construction creates a fast, dynamic and highly responsive surfboard that’s been design engineered for performance surfing ranging from the intermediate to advanced level.
FutureFlex is a stringer-less parabolic carbon fiber frame construction, shaped out of high density EPS foam and built from custom designed materials exclusive to the Haydenshapes brand. The technology delivers a high energy, rapid spring back resulting in ultimate speed and drive.
The EPS core is high density EPS – expanded polystyrene – foam with a similar density to your regular PU foam blank. The main advantage of the EPS core is that is has a high strength to weight ratio and good compression stability. This prolongs the life of the core and when combined with the parabolic carbon fiber frame and epoxy laminate your surfboard will maintain its liveliness longer that a PU surfboard.
The key to the flex pattern of the FutureFlex boards is the parabolic carbon fiber frame that is constructed within the laminate. The carbon fiber frame is designed to maximize speed and drive whilst maintaining a flex pattern that flows with the wave. The structural design of the frame minimizes twisting of the board, which results in a very lively and responsive flex pattern. You will feel the board responding to your surfing much quicker, which results in more speed and drive when you need it.
The epoxy laminate is the final process in manufacturing the board. It is glassed very similarly to a standard PU surfboard only that we use a high quality, UV resistant epoxy resin system. The epoxy resin system creates a highly flexible laminate, resilient to cracking and fracturing and has a flexural life span 2-3 times a polyester resin. The FutureFlex also uses a Quad Axial fibreglass cloth configuration to transfer load from the surfers feet out to the carbon fiber frame whilst maximising flex and strength through the lamination.
FutureFlex boards are constructed using custom designed high performance materials. However, like any surfboard, this does not prevent the board from breakage or compressions. If damage occurs, dry out all water from the EPS core before repairing it using Epoxy resin. It is recommended that you do not leave your board in direct sunlight or in a hot confined space. Using our signature Quad Axial lamination on the deck, the layers of E grade fibgerglass are layer on 4 different orientations to deliver maximum strength of the glass fibers laid out flat and stacked on top of one an other, along with a powerful and balanced combination of longitudinal and torsional flex. This lamination will disperse the compressional load from your feet to help prevent denting on the deck of your board (the EPS foam will naturally always dent, but compared with a standard 4×4 lamination there is quite an improvement). A standard FutureFlex lamination will have 10.5oz of cloth on the deck and 4oz on the bottom.
This next level of strength and stiffness will add around 13% of fiberglass to your lamination to give added support to the pressure the board will be exposed to. Recommended for surfers looking to surf more powerful waves where strength, stiffness and weight can start to play a contributing factor to your boards performance. A Standard Plus FutureFlex lamination will have 10.5oz of cloth on the deck and 6oz on the bottom.
This is the maximum level of stiffness and strength that we offer and will add around 25% more fiberglass to your laminate. Increasing both the deck and bottom lamination fiber weight will overall give you a stronger and stiffer lamination. Recommended for those who are looking for long term durability or a board that will handle some of the most powerful conditions. A Plus FutureFlex lamination will have 12.5oz of cloth on the deck with 6oz on the bottom.
